Bike Fit
Bike Fit is a service offered by Apple Physical Therapy designed to meet the needs of cyclists of all ages and abilities, whether the bike is used for transportation, fitness or competition. Through extensive education, our therapists understand the impact proper fit and biomechanics can have on injury correction, prevention and performance at any level. Our therapists evaluate and perform advanced biomechanical assessments for a proper medical bike fit. Our therapists have also been trained to understand the similarities and differences inherent in road, mountain, triathlon and spin/fitness cycling.
Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation begins with a comprehensive evaluation of the current injury. This includes evaluation of tissue pathology, flexibility, strength and balance as it pertains to cycling function. From there, an individualized program is developed to address these issues, including manual therapy, therapeutic exercise and functional activities for the various regions of the body. A graduated "return to cycling" schedule is then formulated to allow the patient to return to the level of participation previously enjoyed.
Injury Prevention
A thorough physical examination combined with a Bike Fit analysis provides exhaustive mechanical information about each cyclist. The results of the evaluation are used to create an injury prevention program specific to each cyclist. This plan includes exercises to correct strength imbalances and limited flexibility, education in the value of proper equipment as it pertains to a specific medical condition, how improper adjustment of this equipment can have a negative impact on biomechanics and a review of training procedures.
Performance Enhancement
The biomechanical information obtained from the physical examination and Bike Fit analysis is used to formulate a plan specific to the healthy, competitive cyclist or multi-sport athlete. The analysis is performed and advice given to improve muscle length-tension relationships, create proper pedal stroke efficiency and power, enhance balance and weight distribution on the bike and improved aerodynamics. Training programs are also reviewed and adjusted, applying established, sound training principles. The athlete can expect an improvement in fun, fitness, comfort and competitive ability.
Individualized Approach
While the general biomechanics of power production and aerodynamics are universal in cycling, we recognize that even in the presence of proper bit, some individuals still have problems and that fit modifications must be made to maximize performance. This allows us to fit the bicycle to the individual and to avoid the problems with forcing the individual to fit the bicycle.
